What materials are your Wave Springs made of?
1. 304 Stainless steel
304 stainless steel is the standard material used for spiral retaining ring. The reason why this material is widely used is that it is good at corrosion resistance plus excellent physical properties.
2. 316 Stainless steel
316SS and 304SS are almost same in terms of physical properties and heat resistance. 316SS is better in corrosion resistance, particularly on pitting, as it contains molybdenum. 316SS is normally used in food, chemical industry and sea water applications. Magnetism of 316SS is lower than 304SS. However, its magnetism will increase when steel wire is cold rolled just like 304SS. And 316SS can’t be hardened through thermal treatment.
3. 631 Precipitation hardening stainless steel
This type of alloy has similar corrosion resistance as 304SS and is almost a specialty material for wave Springs. However, due to its higher tensile strength and yield strength, it fits for applications of special retaining rings. Working against fatigue and high stress, the 17-7 performance is even better than the top-notch carbon steel. Its resilience is realized by precipitating from state of C to state of CH900. Therefore this type of material can resist high temperature 343TMC without losing resilience. The 631precipitation hardened stainless steel in state of CH900 shares similarity in magnetism with high-carbon steel.
